About this site
Colophon
How this site is built and why it looks the way it does.
This site is meant to read like a good notebook kept at a café table: plain, warm, and mostly words. It is static HTML generated by Astro from Markdown files in a Git repository, and every push rebuilds it on Cloudflare. There is no database and no tracking. The only JavaScript is the light and dark switch and the copy buttons on code blocks.
Type and colour
Headings and long reading are set in EB Garamond, a revival of the types Claude Garamond cut in sixteenth-century Paris. Everything else is in Instrument Sans, and code is in JetBrains Mono. The light theme is the colour of a latte, the dark one an espresso. The few engravings on the site are public domain, served from Wikimedia Commons.
Writing an essay
A new essay is one Markdown file in src/content/writing, described at the top:
---
title: 'What a pseudo-terminal really is'
description: One or two sentences on what the reader will learn.
date: 2026-11-15
track: systems # or: philosophy
